“When words fail, art speaks.” Raphael Chikukwa

The first On Location exhibition

Amos Trust has been developing links and building relationships with the visual arts community in Gaza since 2015. In 2021, we launched On Location to promote, support and celebrate the power, resilience and vibrancy of Gaza’s artistic community living and working under siege.

This inaugural online exhibition introduced the broader international community to leading visual artists from Gaza, exploring the motivations, frustrations and realities of creating art under blockade. While we launched it online, we hoped one day to show the work in real life.

The Zimbabwean curator Raphael Chikukwa stated: “when words fail, art speaks.” On Location provides a platform and opportunity for the artists of Gaza to speak to the world — a mission that has only grown more urgent since the devastating war that began in October 2023.

The artists featured in this first exhibition overcame extraordinary obstacles to create works of remarkable beauty and insight. Their creativity challenges our expectations and reminds us why promoting Palestinian culture is vital in maintaining Palestinian identity and demanding Palestinian rights.
