COP 26 – Young Climate Activists
Thursday 6th May 2021

Watch again

When the 2020 COP (UN Climate Change Conference) was delayed by 12 months due to the pandemic, young people from around the world called their own Mock COP. Delegates from 140 countries put together and voted through their own treaty with 18 policies and demands for COP 26.

The Mock COP showed what climate action looks like when young people — particularly those from the Global South already experiencing climate breakdown — lead the conversation. Their demands centered justice, equity and urgency rather than the compromised half-measures that typically emerge from official negotiations.

We were delighted to host a group of young climate activists from the UK and Nicaragua, brought together by our partner CEPAD. They identified which aspects of the Mock COP 26 treaty were most important to them, what they were doing to pressure governments to adopt them and what they wanted us to do.

This conversation captured their hopes, fears and demands ahead of COP 26.
