S2, E6: Raja Shehadeh: Palestinian walks and the Balfour Declaration
An evening with Raja Shehadeh
Monday 2nd November 2020
We were delighted to be joined by Palestinian author and lawyer Raja Shehadeh for this special interview and book reading on the 103rd anniversary of the Balfour Declaration.
On 2nd November 1917, the British government issued the Balfour Declaration, promising a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine without consulting the Palestinians who lived there. Its consequences continue to shape Palestinian lives today.
Raja Shehadeh’s book Palestinian Walks is a meditation on landscape, memory and loss — exploring how the Israeli occupation has transformed the hills around Ramallah where he has walked for decades. His writing bears witness to what has been taken, what endures and what it means to keep walking through a landscape under erasure.
The book inspired Amos Trust’s Just Walk To Jerusalem project in 2017, when we walked to Palestine from London to apologise for the Balfour Declaration on its centenary. In this conversation, Raja reads from his work and reflects on walking, writing and resistance.
