Climate Fellowship 2024/25
The Amos Climate Fellowship: 2024/25 cohort
Grassroots climate action in Mexico and Central America
Making history together
In January 2024, we launched the first cohort of the Amos Climate Fellowship — twelve young women land defenders and climate activists from Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica and Honduras who stepped forward to lead change in their communities.
They came with urgent challenges, deep knowledge of their territories and a vision for climate justice rooted in their lived experiences. Over twelve months, they transformed that vision into action.

Projects that change lives
The projects these fellows led tackled real, immediate threats to their communities:
- improving waste management in areas overwhelmed by landfills,
- installing rainwater harvesting systems to secure water access,
- training young people to become the next generation of climate leaders,
- restoring mangrove ecosystems damaged by pollution,
- preserving ancestral water collection techniques threatened by modernisation,
- amplifying Indigenous women's voices in international climate advocacy.
Many worked directly with Indigenous communities, recognising that the solutions to the climate crisis already exist in ancestral knowledge and traditional practices. The challenge is protecting and elevating that wisdom before it’s lost.
Together, these twelve projects have already benefited around 790 people — most of them women who are on the frontlines of climate impacts.
Learning and growing together
This wasn’t just about funding projects. It was about building capacity, confidence and community.
For two months at the start of the Fellowship, participants received hands-on support to refine their project ideas, develop realistic budgets and gain practical skills in project management, financial planning and measuring outcomes. Many were coordinating major initiatives for the first time.
“My experience coordinating and implementing the project was incredible and deeply enriching. I had never coordinated a project before, and it has been so rewarding to see it evolve from the initial phase through to execution.” Lucía Rodríguez
In August 2024, we visited six fellow-led projects across Mexico — five days of shared learning, connection and inspiration. Several Climate Fellows joined these visits, creating opportunities to see each other’s work, reflect on challenges and celebrate victories together. These moments of solidarity strengthened their network and reminded them they’re not alone in this fight.
“Now we feel more inspired and motivated after listening to other women doing similar work, and we have more tools to ensure our actions are rooted in our knowledge and worldviews.” Mitzy Cortés
Building a movement
The first cohort of the Amos Climate Fellowship proved something vital: when you support grassroots activists with resources, training and solidarity — they transform their communities and build movements.
These twelve women are now part of a growing network of climate defenders across Mexico and Central America. They’re sharing knowledge across borders, mentoring new fellows and carrying forward the courage and vision needed for long-term change.
Their impact continues. The 2024 fellows helped shape the participatory process to select projects for the second cohort, ensuring the Fellowship remains community-led and rooted in the realities of those doing the work.
This is how climate justice grows — one community, one project, one network of solidarity at a time.
Support the next generation
The work doesn’t stop here — it’s just beginning. The second cohort is already underway, with twelve new fellows designing projects, learning together and preparing to defend their territories and communities.
By supporting the Climate Fellowship, you’re investing in local leaders who understand their ecosystems, honour ancestral wisdom and refuse to give up on the possibility of a liveable future.
