Why advocacy matters

Supporting Women Land Defenders in Mexico and Central America

Climate change is a justice issue. While our Climate Fellowship supports grassroots projects on the ground, advocacy work challenges the systems, policies and power structures that drive climate injustice in the first place.

Amos Trust’s climate advocacy operates on multiple levels:

  • supporting fellows to advocate in their own communities and countries,
  • amplifying their voices in international spaces and campaigning for policy change in the UK.

Amplifying frontline voices

Women land defenders and climate activists in Mexico and Central America are leading some of the most innovative responses to the climate crisis. But their voices are often excluded from the spaces where decisions are made.

Through our Climate Fellowship, we provide platforms for fellows to share their experiences and expertise — at conferences, in the media, through written work and in international advocacy spaces. We ensure their knowledge reaches policymakers, researchers and the broader climate movement.

When fellows speak, we amplify. When they advocate, we stand alongside them.

Advocacy in action

Our fellows challenge power through the projects they implement.

They advocate for:

  • recognition of Indigenous land rights and territorial sovereignty,
  • an end to extractivism and environmental destruction,
  • women’s leadership in climate decision-making,
  • accountability for climate harms and environmental violence,
  • protection for land defenders facing threats and criminalisation.

We provide training, resources and solidarity to support their advocacy work, recognising that defending the land often means confronting powerful interests.

UK-based campaigning

Climate Justice requires action here in the UK too.

We work to:

  • educate UK audiences about the root causes of climate injustice,
  • challenge UK policies that enable extractivism and climate harm abroad,
  • build solidarity between UK communities and climate activists in Mexico and Central America,
  • advocate for climate finance that actually reaches frontline communities,
  • push for foreign policy that centres human rights and environmental justice.

Through events, resources, campaigns and partnerships, we connect people in the UK with the climate justice movement and create pathways for meaningful action.

International advocacy

Climate activists from the Global South — particularly women, Indigenous peoples and youth — are systematically excluded from international climate negotiations. When they do gain access to spaces like COP, they often face barriers, tokenism and a refusal to centre their solutions.

We share the voices of fellows who choose to participate in international advocacy, learning from their experiences and bringing their stories to our audience.
