Bread Ovens & Hot Meals for families in Gaza

A few months ago, through our friends at the Gaza Sunbirds, we were introduced to the Ajyal Association for Creativity and Development.

Founded in Gaza City in 2003, Ajyal is a youth-led organisation dedicated to improving the lives of children and young people. We’ve been hugely impressed by their creativity and resilience and were delighted when they invited us to partner with them on a microbakery programme.
She Is Capable
She Is Capable, the programme supported 20 women in displacement camps around Gaza City — each of them the sole breadwinner for their families.
Ajyal provided them with portable clay bread ovens (made locally), baking utensils and essential supplies — flour, firewood and more — to set up their own microbakeries. Alongside the equipment, the women received training in bread, pastry and cake baking, as well as business management, marketing and food hygiene.
The aim was not only to improve food security and provide income, but also to tell a story of resilience, creativity and women’s economic empowerment in the face of unimaginable hardship.
We’ve been hugely impressed by their creativity and resilience and were delighted when they invited us to partner with them on a microbakery programme.
Ajyal completed the She Is Capable programme at the end of August. When we asked if they wanted to run it again, their answer was heartbreaking but clear: with Israeli attacks intensifying on Gaza City, and with families already displaced multiple times likely to be forced to move again, they felt they needed to focus instead on their Hot Meals for Children programme.

With your support, we immediately sent the funds needed to provide hot vegetarian meals for 5,500 people across five displacement camps in and around Gaza City, as well as for 600 children in a local orphanage.

The scale of shortages is staggering. Before the war, a meal would have cost less than £1. Today, it costs £6.
Ajyal is determined to keep the Hot Meals programme running for as long as possible, until the Israeli assault makes it impossible to continue.
We have already funded a second wave of meals, and we are committed to supporting Ajyal’s efforts for as long as they can provide this lifeline to the one million people sheltering in Gaza City, who face starvation and further displacement.

It now costs £6 to provide one hot vegetarian meal for a family in Gaza — meals that were less than £1 before the war.
Every donation helps Ajyal continue their Hot Meals for Children programme, providing food and dignity to families who have lost everything.
In the future, the ‘7th October’ will hold a place of particular significance. For Israel, it will be remembered because of the loss of 1,200 lives, the brutality of the Hamas attack and the fate of 251 hostages. For Palestinians, and those who have watched the events of the last year unfold, it will be remembered for the destruction and hatred unleashed on Gaza that has left 40,000 dead, 10,000 missing, 100,000 injured, 2 million displaced and so much destruction.
On 17th October, 2023, we received the devastating news of a strike on our partner, Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City, which tragically claimed hundreds of lives. Remarkably, the hospital reopened the next day to continue treating patients. Read our update on the current situation.
Our partner, NECC/DSPR Gaza, began providing post-traumatic psychotherapeutic support following the 2008 Gaza conflict to children (and their mothers) and young people involved in their youth training programme. Initially considered a temporary programme, they soon realised that in Gaza, trauma is an ongoing condition, leading to the continuous provision of their psychosocial support programmes since then. Thanks to your generosity, we’re delivering food aid in Gaza. Since Israel imposed a food embargo on Gaza after the 7th October attack, we have been doing all we can to make sure that people sheltering from the Israeli attacks have been able to have food and water. This is now even more important as the Rafah crossing has been closed to aid supplies for 6 weeks and starvation and food insecurity levels across Gaza continue to rise. Find out more.
940 People. 1 Toilet. That was the situation in the camps in Rafah (at the southern tip of Gaza) among the 1.1 million people sheltering there before Israel invaded on 6th May. Since then, 1 million people have been forced out of this so-called safe area, with 900,000 of them moving to central Gaza onto an even thinner strip of land along the coast, with virtually no facilities.
