Life for girls and young women on the streets is particularly hard and the support they need is often challenging to provide. Our aim is to help teenage girls and young women on the streets to realise their rights.
Our partners have developed highly focused, local responses to reach children and young people on the streets. Amos Trust is committed to supporting our partners’ innovative work with girls and young women on the streets in particular.
We currently partner with Umthombo in South Africa, New Generation in Burundi, Karunalaya in India and Cheka Sana Foundation in Tanzania.

“At first, I feared a lot when I was told I have HIV. But when I attended a meeting, I realised I was not alone; I gained the courage to go on, take my drugs, and I gave birth to an HIV-negative baby. Thank you, Cheka Sana, for bringing back my smile, happiness, and peace of mind.” Katie Hagley writes about how Cheka Sana in Tanzania are bringing hope to young mothers and at-risk women on the streets of Mwanza.
“Umthombo helped me a lot. Now, my life has changed. I no longer use drugs and I live in a proper place. I’ve been provided with food and they have paid for my room.” This month, we share three stories of hope from young women who are benefiting from Umthombo’s Independent Living Programme in Durban, South Africa.
“Mwanamke Mwenye — Superwoman”, said the 18-year-old holding her young baby; the rest of us replied, “Superwoman — Mwanamke Mwenye.” Chris Rose writes about his recent visit to Amos partner Cheka Sana Tanzania and an update from their StreetBorn programme, working with young women on the streets of Mwanza.
At the Street Child Cricket World Cup in September 2023, young people participated in a youth congress and represented their countries in the international cricket competition. Each team worked to prepare their own Declaration, focusing on the issues most affecting street children in their country. Karunalaya’s team were named the Team India Tigers. We invited photographer and filmmaker Tom Merilion to share some of his favourite images from his visit to our partner Karunalaya in India. Tom said, “I was blown away by the people I met; the staff, the children and the adults they support. Karunalaya is a very special place. Hopefully the following images capture some of that magic.”
Amos Trust brought together women from 8 countries who work with girls on the streets. Girls who face child marriage, prison or are involved in sex work. They shared new ways of working, with a collective vision to see girls live free from abuse. This is their story.
