As the blockade of Gaza entered its 13th year, the devastating impact on Gaza’s infrastructure, economy and health service meant that when the pandemic reached the general population, it had catastrophic consequences.

Gaza’s health system was already crippled by years of blockade, with chronic shortages of medical supplies, electricity cuts and restricted movement. The arrival of COVID-19 pushed an already fragile situation to breaking point.

Ahmed Masoud and Hind Khoudary share firsthand accounts of what life was like in the Strip during the pandemic, exploring how communities coped when one of the world’s most densely populated areas faced a global health crisis under siege.
