Amos Climate Justice seeks to develop a greater understanding of how to support highly impoverished rural communities as they face the impact of climate change.
Over the next 5 years we will be supporting seven rural communities in Teustepe, Nicaragua through our long-term partner CEPAD – a vibrant community-led organisation working with communities to identify their needs and provide training and resources, equipping communities to become self-sustaining.
Their needs include access to electricity, water and healthcare; better roads, farming skills, leadership training, youth work and women’s economic development.

Nicaragua has recently been battered by two hurricanes in rapid succession. Hurricane Eta caused extensive damage along the Caribbean coast before inflicting far greater damage on Gautemala. Hurricane Iota hit the already-saturated land causing mudslides, flooding and extensive damage to central Nicaragua including the communities we support in Teustepe. We received this update from Olivia Lekel from our partner CEPAD.
“Ahead of the conference, many environmental scholars and activists were sceptical about what the outcome would be — claiming that promises from the Paris Agreement were still yet to be met. This sentiment is mainly fuelled by the perpetrators of the climate crisis, such as the UK and the US, taking centre stage at the negotiating table.” Amos Research Intern Fleur Boya writes from Glasgow.
“Farmers proudly brought some of the fruits and vegetables they had managed to produce this harvest, many of which they had not been able to farm before. One farmer from a community in the Boaco communities proudly showed off his crop of tomatoes, which was a first for him, in such a dry region where they are generally not easy to grow.” Katie Hagley writes about how communities in Teustepe, Nicaragua are beginning to thrive.

For our fifth episode of A Dozen Tuesdays we headed to Nicaragua where Amos Trust’s Karin Joseph was live in Teustepe with CEPAD Director Emily Reyes and Field Workers Harold Blandon and Joel Rodriguez, to celebrate CEPAD’s 50th anniversary. Emily, Harold and Joel updated us on their current work — particularly their new five-year programme with seven new communities around Teustepe in the Baoco region that Amos supports.
For our 33rd and final webinar of Amos@6 Season 4, we took the opportunity to celebrate our planet and to amplify the call for radical action to address climate change and to call for climate justice. Spoken word artist Zena Kazeme performed some of her own work as well as hosting a range of other performers and activists. Zena Kazeme is a Persian-Iraqi poet and author who draws on her experiences as a former refugee to create poetry that explores themes of exile, home, war and heritage.
When last year’s COP (UN Climate Change Conference) was delayed by 12 months, young people from around the world called their own ‘Mock COP’. Delegates from 140 countries put together and voted through their own treaty with 18 policies/demands for COP 26. For our own COP 26 webinar, we were delighted to host a group of young climate activists from the UK and Nicaragua who were drawn together by our partner CEPAD.
