Merai Al-Ra’i: Rest in power
We lost a very dear friend earlier this week.
Meree Al-Ra’i or Uncle Abu Ismail from Arroub refugee camp in the West Bank. We knew him as Merai.
Merai was a defender of the oppressed and a courageous voice for justice and human dignity. Everyone who had the privilege of knowing him and working alongside him felt his impact deeply.
He played a vital role in many of our projects in Area C, particularly our joint home-rebuilding initiatives with Holy Land Trust, for families whose homes had been demolished by the Israeli authorities. He opened his home to us, welcomed us with extraordinary generosity and shared stories of struggle and resilience that stayed with all who heard them.
His commitment to the joint home-rebuilding projects with our partner Holy Land Trust was unwavering, and his contribution will always be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.

We will miss his kindness, his warmth, his unshakeable spirit — and his Zarb Chicken! His memory lives on in every home where hope was rebuilt through solidarity and compassion.
We send our love and condolences to his family and all those who mourn him. May he rest in peace.
Two weeks is a long time in Palestine
