S2, E4: Rosy October in Gaza
Rosy October in Gaza
Thursday 15th October 2020
October is breast cancer awareness month, or ‘Rosy October’ as it’s known in Gaza. Before the 2023 genocide, breast cancer was the most common form of cancer among Palestinian women in Gaza, and they were three times more likely to die from the disease than women in the UK, Israel or the West Bank.
Stigma meant many women delayed seeking help until it was too late. Al Ahli Arab Hospital’s breast cancer screening programme worked to break down these barriers, offering early detection, treatment and vital awareness work in a community where talking about breast cancer was often taboo.
Dr Suhaila Tarazi, Director of Al Ahli in Gaza, joins us with members of her team to discuss the screening programme and the challenges of maintaining healthcare under siege. They also share what it was like living through the coronavirus pandemic in Gaza — where an already devastated health system faced yet another crisis.
Our guests:
- Dr Suhaila Tarazi: Director, Al Ahli Arab Hospital, Gaza City
