India Encounter 2017

Amos Trust goes to India: 7th – 16th August 2017
This Amos trip will enable you to meet street children and their families, to discover the issues they face, and learn about the solutions they are exploring with the help of Amos partner Karunalaya; solutions that speak of creativity, resilience, hope, and perseverance against the odds.

Would you like to encounter India in 2017?

This is a chance to visit Amos’ inspirational partner Karunalaya in Chennai and experience aspects of South India most people never see.

Dates: Monday 7th – Wednesday 16th August 2017
Cost: £1,300 including return flights *

This trip will enable you to meet street children and their families, to discover for yourself the issues they face, and learn about the solutions they are exploring with Karunalaya; solutions that speak of creativity, resilience, hope, and perseverance against the odds.

Art, culture, and sport

On this trip, you will have the chance to:

  • watch as the children use theatre to engage and educate local communities about children’s rights
  • take part in yoga sessions and football training with the children
  • encounter the children’s traditional drumming and dance.

Advocacy and outreach

An important part of this trip will include joining Karunalaya's outreach teams:

  • experiencing their work on the railway platforms where many street children end up
  • witness their advocacy work with pavement dwelling communities
  • witness their informal education sessions with child labourers in the local fishing community.

Food and politics

India is a heady mix of sights and sounds, food and politics:

  • there will be the opportunity to savour fabulous south Indian food and to learn to cook with members of the Karunalaya team
  • hear about the current political situation and the challenges facing the country
  • meet activists campaigning for Dalit rights and hear of the particular challenges facing Dalit Christians
  • there will be a chance to visit Chennai, to shop in the local markets and to spend a few days out of the city relaxing by the coast and visiting the fantastic complex at Mamallapuram in the state of Tamil Nadu, around 60km south of the city of Chennai.

Accommodation in Chennai will be at the YWCA guest house, in basic but comfortable air-conditioned rooms. The YWCA is set within a green oasis in the middle of the busy, colourful, noisy, and hectic city of Chennai.

This visit is limited to 15 places, and so we're recommending that people book as early as possible. The trip will be led by Amos Trustee Jude Levermore, and members of the Karunalaya staff team.

This trip will be of particular interest to:

  • those who want to learn more about the lives and experiences of the children with whom Karunalaya works
  • those who are passionate about advocacy work and how former street children are leading the campaign to secure legal identities for others
  • those who want to experience the manic bustle and colour of an Indian city.

For those with a particular interest in healthcare, education and the arts, there will also be the option to adjust individual itineraries to suit.

You will also be able to extend your visit to include some time to travel – to explore the beautiful backwaters, beaches, and cuisine of Kerala, to head over to the beaches and nightlife of Goa or to travel around Tamil Nadu or the North of India.

We will be happy to offer advice to those who wish to extend their visits and can adjust flight costs accordingly.

Important note:

* Please note that costs for this trip may rise for bookings made after May 2017 to reflect late flight bookings.
