Just Walk to Jerusalem is a bold initiative to mark the centenary of the Balfour Declaration and 50 years of military occupation of the Palestinian Territories.
On 2nd November 1917, the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary, Arthur James Balfour, declared:
"His Majesty's Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine."
On the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration and the 50th anniversary of the Occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, it’s time to acknowledge that the people and Government of the UK carry a responsibility. It’s time to change the record.
Seeds of the thorns of injustice, inequality and violence we see on the ground today were sown in the Balfour Declaration and are fed and watered by our ongoing refusal to make any serious challenge to the Occupation in all its brutal realities.
History has shown that these rights were not worth the paper they were written on. In 1967, 50 years of military occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights began. In 2007, the Israeli blockade of Gaza began.
To mark the anniversary of these events and the spiralling descent away from a lasting accord, Amos Trust is calling on all those who wish to join us to walk from London to Jerusalem to call for justice and full equal right for everyone who calls the historic land of Palestine home.
